My name is Dan Smyth, a Sleep Apnoea patient of over 20 years and a compliant user of CPAP.
I have developed an almost insatiable interest in SLEEP, initially Sleep Apnoea and then general sleep issues. It never ceases to amaze me the large number of people who suffer from a sleep disorder, continue to live in DENIAL of it and never actually bother to have it dealt with. I believe that most sleep disorders can be successfully managed, if the sufferer engages with good healthcare professionals AND makes the honest effort to try and make things work.
My experience and knowledge in SLEEP disorders comes from being a patient advocate in both sleep and respiratory health.
I am one of the founder members of The Irish Sleep Apnoea Trust (ISAT) and am currently its Honorary Secretary www.isat.ie
I am A Past Chair of The European Lung Foundation (ELF) http://www.europeanlung.org and a past member of the leadership of the ERS (European Respiratory Society) https://www.ersnet.org. I am also a past member of the ERS Advocacy Council, Tobacco Control Committee and the Environment and Health Committee. I am the first ‘patient’ to achieve these positions. My mandate for these positions was for the period, September 2014 to September 2017 (3 years).
I am a member of several Respiratory Task Forces/Clinical Research Collaborations, both as a full member or as an Advisory Board member. I was a member of the Scientific Committee of The 7th European Congress on Tobacco or Health http://www.ectoh.com
I have had a number of articles published in The European Respiratory Journal, The British Medical Journal and a number of European Political Publications, mainly relating to patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
I also speak at Clinical and Scientific Conferences, Patient Information and Advocacy Events and Forums throughout Europe.
All my activities are on a voluntary, unpaid basis.
